Vox Fortis Blow the Roof Off: The Surprise Operatic Powerhouse of BGT

Occasionally, a group takes the stage at Britain’s Got Talent and totally transforms the atmosphere in the room. That moment arrived during Week 4 of the 2016 tryouts when a group of finely dressed men identified themselves as Vox Fortis. The judges and audience had no idea that they were going to see a vocal performance so strong it would shake the theater’s rafters.

It was obvious as soon as they opened their mouths that this would not be your typical boy band audition. In a performance that left Simon Cowell speechless and audiences grabbing for the replay button, Vox Fortis combined operatic voices, dramatic film, and intense emotion.

Let’s examine this memorable audition, its progression, and the reasons Vox Fortis emerged as one of the most notable BGT 2016 moments.

Who Are Vox Fortis, the Quiet Before the Storm?

Vox Fortis appeared calm, polite, and even a little subtle as they entered the stage. They gave little away with their modest introductions and matching black suits. However, their moniker, which means “Strong Voice” in Latin, was the first indication that something noteworthy was going to occur.

Four vocalists with classical training comprise the group: Rodney Clarke, Julius Williams, Lawrence O’Connor, and Baswaine Charles. Together, the group’s members’ years of vocal experience produced a blend of voices that was explosive and rich.

They delivered the straightforward but impactful response, “We want to bring classical music to a wider audience,” when asked why they founded the group.

They had no idea that they were going to accomplish that in the most spectacular manner.

The Performance That Shocked Everyone Out

A silence descended on the theater as the music started, “Nella Fantasia,” an ethereally lovely rendition of Ennio Morricone’s “Gabriel’s Oboe.” That initial note? It was striking, full-bodied, and perfectly clear. And chills when the harmonies came in. Real chills. ❄️

The BGT audience has never witnessed anything like their mix of voice control, emotive delivery, and operational strength that season. You could see people’s jaws falling all across the room when they reached the crescendo.

Even the judges, who have witnessed everything from singing dogs to fire-eating magicians, were clearly touched.

Amanda Holden let out a gasp.
David Walliams gave a heartfelt bow of appreciation.
Indeed, Simon Cowell leaned forward, a sign of true admiration that every BGT fan is aware of.

The theater exploded in standing ovations and applause when they were done. It was an exciting moment. ⚡
